Our History

At the time of its establishment in December 1994, HHLC was affiliated with the National Federation of Women’s Club of the Philippines (NFWCP) for practical reasons. Some documents required by DECS, now DepEd, to operate in time for the June 1994 class opening were not yet ready. However, on January 3, 1995, DECS granted permit to open pre-school education program.

On its first year of operation, the NFWCP- affiliated HHLC drew an unexpected enrollment of one hundred eight (108) preschool children. The number far exceeded the modest enrollment target of more or less fifty (50) preschool-aged children. The following year saw an even more impressive and significant increase in the number of enrollees.

A year after its establishment and on account of its rapid growth in enrollment and the clamor of parents for a regular elementary school, HHLC was converted into Herman Harrell Horne School Inc (HHHS). The new name reflected the integrated nature of the school curriculum. Consequently, HHHS was incorporated under the Philippine laws and was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on April 3, 1995 as a non- sectarian non-profit educational institution and was granted government recognition on February 2, 1996.

From a humble one-room NFWCP-affiliated preschool learning center in December 1993, HHHS has gone a very long way. It has metamorphosed into a competitive, modern and efficient institution of learning offering preschool, elementary and secondary education programs. Two four-storey buildings and one main preschool center were added to the facilities of the school in just a span of five years from year 2002 – 2007. To add to this, a one-storey building with six classrooms was erected in 2014.

The founder’s unfailing faith, dedication and determination that every child, pupil or student, regardless of one’s socio-economic status in life, deserves to enjoy quality education with equal privilege to modest facilities offered by the school. With thiscontinuing advocacy, it gave birth to the HHHS – Hinigaran Campus at Brgy. Gargato , Hinigaran, Negros Occidental who catered 112 students in its first year of operation in 2016.

In 2017, a new four-storey building was erected to become the new administration building and the home of the senior high school students.

Herman Harrell Horne School Inc thrivesas a developing institution guided by the vision to become one of the most competent and competitive institutions in the delivery of Basic Education – the Preschool, Elementary and High School.

The dynamic spirit of Herman Harrell Horne School Inc serves as the strong pillar that Harrellian graduates are destined to give Glory to God, their Country and their Family.

The Man Behind the Name

merican philosopher and educator Herman Harrell Horne (1874-1946) was a leading spokesman for philosophical idealism in educational theory and practice during the first half of the 20th century. He advocated a spiritual and religious approach to education.

Herman Harrell Horne was born on November 22, 1874, in Clayton, North Carolina. His father was Hardee Horne, a farmer, and his mother was Ida Caroline Harrell Horne. Horne was educated in the public schools of Clayton and also at the Davis Military Academy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina in the early 1890s, receiving both the B.A. and the M.A. degrees in 1895. Shortly thereafter he went toHarvard University, where he received a second M.A. degree in 1897 and the Ph.D. degree in 1899. He did post-graduate work at the University of Berlin in 1906-1907.

Horne began his teaching career as an instructor in the Frenchlanguageat the University of North Carolina in 1894, a post he relinquished when he entered Harvard. Following the completion of hisdoctorate in 1899, Horne took a

While at Dartmouth part of his teaching responsibility was in the area of  philosophy of education, and some of his students later became prominent educational leaders, such as Harry Woodburn Chase, later chancellor of New York University;  Edmund Ezra Day, later president of Cornell University; and Frank Porter Graham, later president of the University of North Carolina. Horne’s interest in philosophy of education prompted him to leave academic philosophy at Dartmouth in 1909 for the position of professor of history and philosophy of education at New York University, a post he held until his retirement in 1942. In addition to his regular academic posts, he also lectured at numerous other leading colleges, universities, and seminaries.

Horne was an advocate of that philosophical school of thought known as idealism, a school that dominated American philosophy from the mid-19th century well into the 20th. Although idealism fell from favor in more recent times, it exercised a decided influence on American schools and the theory of education and it continue to have moderate influence in religious education. Basically, idealism, as articulated by Horne in Idealism in Education(1910), holds to the centrality of the freedom of will, but it also recognizes that the individual is not an isolated entity; rather, the individual is a part of a larger whole.

HARRELL HORNE HYMN
Lyrics by: Ma. Luz S. Villanueva, MA. Ed.

She was conceived, she was created

Bonded by love and longing to serve;

Heart’s full of desire to children

With endearment and commitment to live.

Oh! Harrell Horne, our dear Alma Mater,

To God we give our trust in full

The wisdom we learned here lies our future

The challenge to face that opens the door.

We ponder in our hearts

Be humble meek but smart;

To accept our mistake, it is where we start.

To gain the integrity, glory and might

That we may achieve the integrity in life.

Oh! Harrell Horne our dear Alma Mater

To God we pledge

Your guiding light will lead

On treading the path

Long live your dreams

Your mission be fulfilled.
